I hope this memorial doesnt backfire ...........
by fleaman uk inwell, ive decided to go tomorrow night after all.not to my local cong but another one in the city where i have a very good friend and a few distant family members.i dont agree with much of the orgs teachings or promotions, but i do believe in jesus and really just have a very, very powerful urge to pay my respects to him.. i have been telling my "worldly"girlfriend about the religion and naturally, she is quite interested as this was part of my life since an early age.. blow me down she really wants to come with me!so when she walks into the hall tomorrow and gets a very warm welcome it will possibly shock her, after some of the stranger stories i have told her about the faith(vague stories including no xmas, disfellowshipping,no after school activities etc).i have told her that the welcome she receives will be warm and imho genuine too.she is quite a spiritual person anyway and will enjoy the occasion.. my worry would be that she will enjoy it too much and go to a follow up.it is quite probable.she has never had anything to do with jw,s before, till going out with yours truly .. i,m interested in your comments?.
thanks for listening.

Small town USA..............
by Sunnygal41 inwho of you on the jwd grew up in a small town?
take us back to one small event in your childhood that you remember.......this may just be a tactile sensation, like the smell of hay or pines or may be something as simple as the feeling of hot, dry dust underfoot........
for me, i remember the hardness of the soil in upstate new york.

Our back yard was very rocky and those rocks were covered with moss. I remember breathing that earthy smell deeply on the first warm day of spring, as a distant steam engine whistled and chuffed. ***daydreams for a minute***

JWs and Independent thinking

Phew! That must have been a lot of work! I can see where you are coming from and that you are sincerely trying to help us, so thank you for that. You must understand, though, that WT references do not constitute proof to anyone but a believing Jehovah's Witness (or non-JWs lacking in discernment). As long as one surrounds himself with JW literature, which usually references itself or its biased translation of the bible, the organization can do no wrong. Any thinking person knows that this is intellectually lazy and dishonest. The fact is that JW doctrines and practices do not hold up under the light of modern knowledge or even the bible.
JW literature loves to remember the big "spiritual cleansing" in 1919 and then use this as an excuse for its long list of false prophecies and wacky doctrines, saying that God is using a humble, teachable group of men. Unfortuantely, this date is projected from the infamous 1914 return of Christ, which is based on Jerusalem falling in 607 B.C.E. It is generally accepted as fact out here in the real world that Jerusalem was destroyed in 587 B.C.E., thus negating all prophecies based on 1914. I would suggest that they find the evidence of Jesus return in the year 1934.
Like it or not, Ben, Jehovah's Witnesses are not God's channel. It's easy to explain away all the mistakes as being old light or a way of testing people's faith, but the fact of the matter is that the Supreme Being of the Universe, should one actually exist, does not make mistakes or disseminate false information. What's that scripture in Deuteronomy about prophesying in God's name and knowing that person is a false prophet when the predictions do not come to pass? Or the one in Isaiah about every saying from God's mouth coming true? Oh, wait, the brothers never prophesied, right? That is the official WT answer. Round and round we go.

Are you "Spiritually Sick"???
by JH inwhy is it that a jw is considered "spiritually sick" by the elders and the members of the congregation, if he suddenly decides to stop going to meetings and doesn't see eye to eye with the organization anymore?.
i see people who belong to other faiths, and are very active and seem spiritually healthy, even though they don't believe in what jw's teach.. .
i've been told by elders, that i was "spiritually sick".

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my case leaving was a sign of spiritual strength, to use their term. I got to the point of realizing that the org was only dragging me down with its rules and regs and not offering any real spiritual food. Let's face it: when they refer to serving God they are really referring to serving the org.
At the time I was praying to Jehovah through Jesus and asking for wisdom and humility to see what was real, no matter how painful that truth was. Lo and behold, all the deceit and lovelessness of the publications became crystal clear, and I lost all faith in the JW cult. They are way off base in using the term "spiritual" to define someone who devotes a lot of energy to the org. In fact, the people who devote the most to the cult are the emptiest, the ones who are duped into thinking the GB are God's channel. One good definition of "spiritually sick" would be thinking one has to attend JW meetings to please God. Believing that God is out there tallying our works and clicking his tongue at the atheists is a sickness in itself, regardless of one's denomination.

New DF/DA Policy?
by new light inwould someone who has the new od book explain any changes in "keeping the congregation clean"?
is it still the same policy or have they actually changed anything?
i'd especially like to know if they are changing their tune on the "inactive".

Thanks for posting those quotes, especially IP_Sec. It would seem that not much has changed. I was curious to see if they would sanction more agressive housekeeping by removing us walkaways. Purplesofa threw a lot of light on things with her idea. It makes sense to me that they don't want people to know how many leave deliberately.

Hey I have 1 question
by Rtjmoss inwhy can't jehovah witnesses go to the school prom?
i have always wondered this.

Wow, even after being born and raised (I was in 11th grade when this article was released), this article is a jaw dropper.
It must be admitted that even the most conscientious of chaperons may find it next to impossible in a darkened ballroom or gymnasium to control a crowd of youths who are bent on having a ?good time.? As a result, the dream of an evening of romance can quickly turn into a nightmare. "There are a lot of fights," says one teenage girl.
OK, so they are trying to insinuate that proms turn violent? Yeah, I guess it's possible, but should kids be taught to assume the worst?
There may also be a fair number of aggressive girls there. A youth who goes alone can easily become the target of unwanted attention.
How brainwashed does a 17-year old male have to be to consider the advances of girls his own age "unwanted attention"? The sad part is that we all know there actually are guys out there who nodded their heads in agreement when reading this. Any straight dude that does not enjoy the thought of nubile 18-year old girls crawling all over him in an effort to get some on prom night has some serious issues.
On the other hand, having a fellow believer as an escort can create yet other complications. After all, dating is taken seriously by Jehovah?s Witnesses today. And even if you feel sure that your escort has no romantic interest in you, to what extent can he or she really serve as a protection?
Ooooooohhhh yeah, the prom is so much better when you have zero sexual interest in your date. It's one thing to be a total minger and have to go with your cousin, but to be an attractive person in the physical prime of life and live this way is a total waste.
Notes 19-year-old Lora: "What?s going to prevent others from cutting in as you dance?or asking you to go out with them? What happens then?" A tense, awkward situation can easily develop.
In the normal world, being asked to dance or to go out is a GOOD thing, Why won't this thing stop highlighting?
Not to be overlooked, either, is the danger of letting your guard down and getting caught up in the spirit of the occasion yourself. Bad associations do "spoil useful habits."
This, to me, is the saddest part of the article. "Getting caught up in the spirit" of something is sacred. It's one of those rare moments when we forget past and future and actually live. Leave it to the boys at Bethel to turn a transcendent experience into something evil.
Well, at least this article shows me why and how I am socially retarded. It should help in the long term project of becoming a well-adjusted human being.

My on-again/off-again disfellowshipping is on-again
by AlmostAtheist intwo of the elders on my appeal committee called me yesterday to let me know they are upholding the decision to df me.
of course, there was no question that they would do that, i even told the guy last time he called that i only appealed to buy some time before the announcement to visit with my jw family.. the interesting thing is how long this has drug on.
my original committee decided to df me towards the end of january, i appealed at the beginning of february, and now i'll finally be announced near the end of march.

Being DFed has its benefits for sure. Your life will hopefully streamline, depending on how wifey handles losing contact, IF she loses contact.
